The reason behind recording this album was to demonstrate the artist's mutifaceted stylistic and diverse musical language in the context of his overall flute chamber works. The four works receorded here are seleceted chamber pieces with the participation of the flute. These pieces are ordered according to a key which, given the interpermeating stylistics of the authior's music as well as his individuality, will allow for the cleaerest and most logical understanding of the composer's unique musical language.
Joseph Jongen's chamber music with the flute, both in terms of scholarly publications and phonographic material recorded by Polish performers, is virtually non-existent in Poland. It is worth emphasising that all the works on this album were recorded in Poland for the first time. By presenting you with this recording I believe that Joseph Jongen's chamber compositions will find a place in your hearts for a long time to come. I also hope that my planned recording of a second album containing his remaining works will become another impulse to further popularize the works of this great Belgian composer.

flutist, graduated with honours from the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź in the class of Professor Antoni Wierzbiński and Dr. Ewelina Zawiślak. He has honed his skills with eminent flutists and pedagogues during international music courses, e.g. with: Andrea Lieberknecht, Carlos Bruneel, Janos Balint, Barbara Gisler-Haase, Dejan Gavricia, Andreas Adorian, Felix Rengglie, Philippe Bernold, Peter-Lukas Graf. Winner of many flute and chamber music competitions home and abroad. He performs as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. Mateusz Wojtkiw has performed in the most important concert halls in Europe, e.g.: Berlin Philharmonic, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Munich Philharmonic, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, National Philharmonic in Warsaw, Theater am Aegi Hannover, Brucknerhaus Linz. He has premiered many works by Polish and foreign composers. Mateusz Wojtkiw is a recepient of numerous scholarships for special artistic achievements. He carries out extensive teaching duties, which have resulted in numerous awards. In 2023, he was awarded the title of Doctor of Arts.
The 'Joseph Jongen - Complete Flute Works Vol. 1' album pertains to the forgotten, and therefore little known, flute chamber works by Joseph Jongen, who is considered the greatest Belgian composer after César Franck. Jongen is undoubtedly one of the most interesting personalities of the Benelux musical world at the turn of the 20th century. When looking for detailed information about the composer, one gets the impression that currently he is a forgotten artist about whom little is said and even less is known. Music encyclopaedias only sapre his compositional activity a few sentences, focusing solely on his organ and piano works.
Research and publications on the Belgian's work are very scarce and mainly concern his organ works. The most comprehensive of these is John Scott Whiteley's book 'Jongen and his Organ Music', published in 1983. There are also several doctoral dissertations and unpublished regional publications, including 'Joseph Jongen: a study of his life, times and music for piano solo' from 1990 by Gary Stegall.
It should be noted that the vast majority of extant articles, dissertations and monographs fail to take into account the composer's vast body of extremely varied chamber music, focusing only on his general compositional style with examples in his solo piano and organ works, yet failing to address the formation and evolution of his individual musical language exemplified by his chamber works.
Exceptions to this include a 1998 doctoral dissertation by an American cellist Laura Jane Thielke 'The evolution of style in the string chamber music works of Joseph Jongen', the other being the only Polish publication, 'Kameralistyka fortepianowa Josepha Jongena. Od ewolucji języka muzycznego po zagadnienia wykonawcze' (Joseph Jongen's piano chamber music. From the evolution of his musical language to matters of performance) by Anna Dębowska-Jaroszek, which was published in 2013.
Jongen composed many chamber works featuring the flute, which are very rarely recorded or performed. These works exhibit a varied way of handling the timbre of the flute and other instruments while searching for new sound and aesthetic qualities expressed with a unique musical language that boasts variable expression and stylistics.
